NPP Projection Blog OPEN 2/9
To do this evening/ was completed:
Oscar Set-Up:
I have set everything up for the Oscars tonight. I reset the cable feed, (it was broken down for Spoons) put it on the appropriate channel, turned OFF the closed captioning we had for the Spirit Awards, and tested it in TH1. Everything looks and sounds great from the cable perspective. You will have a little bit of black space on either side of the image, however the 1.78 masking stop cuts in too much. 1.85 is fine in my opinion BUT if you feel strongly about doing a custom masking setting before opening doors, Alec, just remember to reset the masking at the end, since I am not on admin tomorrow and Chris is opening.
Also, I ran into issues with the wireless mic sound.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
Since we had Spoons complain about clipping at the higher end, I believe that Michael made a slight adjustment to the Tapco mixer in the booth, the result was that down in the theater, on the Yamaha mini-mixer, in order to be heard at all, you had to turn up the gain, mic volume and master volume to a point where there was loud passive buzzing coming through the PA speakers. I tried to make the Tapco the baseline, so adjustments on the fly could be made on the one in the theater, but I was running out of time before opening (didn't have a 2nd set of ears in the theater) and couldn't get the buzzing/volume balance so I had to make the Yamaha the baseline, which means I took the gain, mic and master volume to a point where no buzzing was heard and then I adjusted the Tapco mixer to get an acceptable balance between good volume/no clipping. This means PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY KNOBS ON THE YAMAHA UNDER THE SCREEN. MAKE ALL ADJUSTMENTS AT THE TAPCO MIXER IN BOOTH 1. Also let the Backstage people know not to make adjustments on their own.
Our browser on the booth 1 PC was set to block adobe flash, so I changed that and you can access the Shure automixer remotely, however you can only adjust the volume on the individual mics from there and not the gain or the master volume on the Tapco mini mixer. With the levels I set, there was no buzzing and no clipping when I started "yelling" on the mics and the volume was decent with the broadcast at 6.5
If the mics are too soft tonight, I would approach it in this order:
1) turn down the volume of the broadcast. ABC was running pretty hot when I tested it, I started at 8.0 since the Superbowl was so quiet and it was incredibly loud. I eventually settled on 6.5 for the programming itself and you still might want to turn down the commercials.
2) turn up the individual mic volumes on the Shure automixer web interface.
3) Try the vol for "mic 1" on the Tapco mixer
4) try the Tapco master volume
5) last resort: bump up the gain a tiny bit on the Tapco mini mixer
Presentation Issues:
-There were none.
Preshow Clips/Playlist:
-Double checked all the timings on the playlists after swapping trailers to see if there was room to add back Cat Vid Fest or Wendy to any lists. That's a big negative. Everything is running right at 40 min.
-Built the playlist for Ace in the Hole
Trailer Updates:
-Oscar trailer has been deleted and swapped out with NPP_Valentines in all lights down trailer packs.
Special Events/ AV set up:
- 100% set up for Oscars. Only need to turn on the surge protector under the screen in TH1, switch the projector to HDMI flat, and set vol at 6.5 Grab wireless mic #1 and #2 from their docking stations. See above in 'to do this evening'.
-Oscars pre pre pre show has been running in hi-res since 1 pm with no sound (just house music). Dodge said to switch over to broadcast sound at 6:30 pm when the official red carpet is due to start.
Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers):
Ordering/Receiving (content):
-Ingested Ace in the Hole, dropped it in the playlist and scheduled it for Monday. I updated the end time on the cue sheets, just need to verify the credit timing. Added a 2 min black slug at the end, remember to take that into account for credit length.
Outgoing/Shipping (content):
-Deleted Moonlight
Print/video Inspection:
-Sent Ace in the Hole to TH2 to be tech'd tonight
-If there is time, can someone listen to PS_Generic_v8_10 and 20 tonight? Gerard said there were huge volume fluctuations during
Asset tracking doc updated/checked?:
Yes, added all booked first runs. Could I make a request: Don't mark the KDM? field as "yes" unless they are actually sitting in our TMS server. If you see a pending delivery on Deluxe, can it be marked as "pending xx/xx" (with the date of pending delivery) and when they are ingested it can be changed to "yes xx/xx" (with the date they go live).
Also, if we are going off of Deluxe to enter things on the asset tracking doc, please double check the delivery date and play date(s) against the 'film distribution doc' as sometimes Deluxe has it wrong.
Maintenance/cleaning:
- I spent quite a bit of time in TH3 this morning, testing the speakers. I used the Dolby test CPL as well as ran the last stand towards the end of Jojo Rabbit, the end of Color Out of Space, 1917, and the times mentioned in the Birds of Prey feature. I was unable to reproduce any problems with the house right speakers. Perhaps when Michael returns he knows of a more robust way to test the speakers.
Cue sheets updated/checked (every shift):
-Cue sheets are good for today and tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday are scheduled.
Marquee updated?:
- Did NOT get a chance to swap out Moonlight for Sabrina, can one of the guys do that for me tonight? Also, the Oscars can come down as soon as it starts and replaced with Ace in the Hole.
Posters updated?:
N/A
Cleaning lights on for the night?:
Projectors off for the night?:
Projection cart by TH5?:
Nest:
-Oscars in high-res. Dodge says to turn on the sound at 6:30.
Additional Notes:
- I made a complete diagram of every signal path and component involved in the cable set-up for trouble shooting and set-up purposes. There is a laminated yellow one stuck to the wall-mounted black box over where the cable box is located. You could set the whole thing up from scratch using this diagram. There are extra copies in a page protector in the box on the table in front of the TMS computer.
-I also made a diagram for the wireless mic set-up, both under the screen and in booth 1. It is laminated and taped to the wall above the mini mixer in booth 1.
