NPP Projection Report 7/21 Admin

To do this evening/ was completed: Theater 1 is open for business today, though still without working AC. There are fans placed around the room so the volume should be increased. I brought the first round of Nope up to 4.5 for trailers and 6 for the feature. The feature also opens with an Oppenheimer trailer, which should be played a bit quieter than the feature, I have it at 5.0 in the playlist, with a cue to raise the volume to 5.5 when the feature starts. The trailer can be left at 5.0 tonight, it’s one minute long so raise the volume a minute into the feature CPL.

Also, just in case the port glass for Theater 1 gets foggy again, I removed two of the four screws that hold the one for the digital projector in place to make removing it easier if it’s needed.

Presentation Issues:

Preshow Clips/Playlist: Built and scheduled playlists for both the dubbed and subtitled versions of Nausicaa.

Trailer Updates:

Special Events/ AV set up: Set mics in Theater 4 for both events tonight. Left two stands under the curtain as well, one for the intro for the private event, two for the Supernova intro.

Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers):

Ordering/Receiving (content): Ingested both versions of Nausicaa to Theater 3. The ingests failed last night, I think when the projector shut off automatically. They ingested without a problem today.

Outgoing/Shipping (content): Scheduled a pickup of Wild Wild West for tomorrow.

Print/video Inspection: Finished inspecting Lilya 4-Ever. The last three reels are a bit more scratched than the others. The labeling on the leaders indicated it had been built up onto 2 6000ft reels, which could explain why reels 4, 5, and 6 have more scratches on them.

Reinspected Wild Wild West, I checked the soundtrack on the reels after Jacks notes from last night, and the digital soundtrack was quite damaged. I noticed heavier damage at the beginning of reel 2, and even more on reel 3, but it was especially damaged on reel 5. The soundtrack on the others was quite scratched but the digital track on 2, 3, and 5 had parts missing. I saw that the digital track had shed a bit when I inspected initially, but not to the extent that it was on reel 5, so I assumed it would still be read OK. I ran reel 5 of the print as well to see if I could recreate the buzzing, and the processor wouldn’t reproduce the digital track and auto switched to the SR optical. Perhaps during the screening, with the processor set to digital beforehand and the track readable on at least reel 1, and possibly 2, it stayed on digital for the damage in the reels which explains the buzzing. This is definitely something to note for further inspections so we can just run the SR track if the digital is too damaged. I also checked the wiring to the processor to see if it might be a similar situation to Theater 6 and it was all fine. The print is back in its cans ready to be returned.

Checked Nope in all houses with the 2.20:1 projector macro. I think this is definitely the optimal way to show it, there is no noticeable cropping of the image in most houses, however in 2 and 5 only, with the screens the size that they are and the projectors at such an angle with respect to the screen, I had to crop a bit to adjust for keystoning. (I’ve noticed when doing house checks that this is also the case for the 1.85 and scope macros in 2 and 5). It’s still not a very significant amount, but if you compare the same scene across houses you will notice a bit cut off at the sides in 2 and 5. I reduced the cropping in 2 and 5 as much as I could without the keystoning becoming too obvious. I think this is the lesser evil for these two theaters as our other options would be to show it in the 1.85 flat macro which would leave the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen (and the sides would still be cropped but not quite as much as with the 2.20 macro because it’s not as zoomed in), or eliminate the cropping on the 2.20 macro leaving the image with very noticeable keystoning.

Checked the Nope playlist as well, it’s all good.

Teched the Out of Time and The Burning prints. Out of Time looked great. The Burning looks good, but it’s a bit beat up. The colors are only slightly faded, it doesn’t really appear as red on screen. Added volume cues to both preshow playlists.

Checked both versions of the Nausicaa DCP, both looked great, sound is mono so I had to raise the volume in the playlist. Both sounded good, though for some reason the dialogue on the English dub sounds a bit more lo-fi than the Japanese. It’s still clear, I think that’s just how it was recorded.
