NPP Projection Report 5/30 Close
To do this evening/ was completed:
Presentation Issues: During the Ricochet screening this evening in theater 4, the leader at the top of reel 4 snapped from there being too much slack around the rollers beneath the film failsafe (by the take-up reel on projector 1). I had thread perfectly and double checked the film to be sure, but didn't think the slack would snap from the jolt of the take-up reel pulling down on it. Approximately a foot of film fell to the ground before I noticed the break in the leader (between the numbers 9 and 10 on the countdown) and I closed the dowser and brought the lights up immediately upon realizing the damage. After rethreading the film onto a separate take-up reel I started the projector motor and brought the house lights down. The reel played smoothly after this fix. Then, during the changeover from reel 5 to reel 6 (which was also thread on projector 1), the leader broke around the failsafe in the same exact spot, and then again between the numbers 2 and 3 on the countdown after the first fix. I had already brought the lights up so the delay lasted another minute as the second tear was repaired. Alec was gracious enough to come up both instances to lend a hand in mending the torn leader and in helping thread the film around the failsafe rollers. I was in constant correspondence with MODs and Cristina, who was present in the auditorium and had mentioned that the owner of the print was watching the show, so everyone was aware of what was happening in the moment. Fortunately, none of the film aside from the aforementioned leader sustained any damage and the film that was torn will be very easily repaired. Alec asked that I leave the film to him to re-inspect, but I had already re-inspected reels 1-3 and 5 during the show, so he will take a look at 4 and 6 and mend the damaged leaders tomorrow afternoon.
