NPP Projection Close 8/31

To do this evening/ was completed: Built a playlist for Walk Hard. Inspected the first three reels of Starship Troopers. Print is in good condition with mild/moderate base scratching.  Presentation Issues: When reel two finished running on projector one, I began threading reel four and noticed that the takeup belt had come loose. I reattached it and reel four played smoothly with no issue. However, toward the end of reel six, the belt came loose again, resulting in about 15% of the reel on the ground. I didn't notice this until the reel finished because I was waiting to changeover to projector two. I picked the film up off the ground and rewound it back on to the reel while holding a kimtech cloth to the film to try to get as much detritus off of it as possible. To my eye there wasn't any on-screen effect during the end portion of reel six. Print has been rewound heads out aside from that reel--it's still tails out. Dragon Ball round two in T6 was listed as ending at 10:40

Built and scheduled Minions , Sunset Blvd , and Barbarian playlists. Built Cinema Day playlists for all first run movies and scheduled them on Sat 9/3. Updated Sign O the Times and Redline playlists. Preshow was either too short (content missing) or too long (a clip needed to be removed). Trailer Updates: Updated the PG trailer pack, Kat added some content to the trailer list. Special Events/ AV set up: Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content):  Received Minions and Barbarian through Deluxe E-delivery. Ingested both. Need to check the credit offset for Minions again, as the one included with the DCP is wrong. I know it has 8 minutes of credits though. Walk Hard drive arrived, locally ingested to Theater 3. The Williamsburg B forecast for 9/2 was ingested and added to our playlists instead of the NPP one. I downloaded/ingested the right one and replaced it in all playlists. Downloaded and ingested the Singers and Actors, Noir, and Satoshi Kon preshow clips for next week’s special event playlists. Built a preshow playlist for Starship Troopers . Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: Panic Room screening went very well. Left the print wound heads out for reinspecting tomorrow. Setup for the live performance at the Reverend screening tomorrow should be very simple. Only two mics, one for vocals and one for an accordion will be needed. To do this evening/ was completed: Completed house checks in each auditorium and made adjustments to focusing and image orientation where necessary Presentation Issues: I noticed during house checks that the port glass in theater 4 had fogged over but it cleared once the auditorium cooled down in the early afternoon; this same issue occurred again during the pre-show for the first round but was resolved after I wiped the port glass from the inside of the auditorium to avoid having to remove the glass and directly fogging up the projector lens Preshow Clips/Playlist: Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content): Starship Troopers and Mars Attacks! prints were delivered and brought to theater 1; Pearl KDMs were delivered and ingested Outgoing/Shipping (content): Brought all outgoing DCP drives to the UPS store for return shipment Print/video Inspection: Asset tracking doc updated/checked?: Maintenance/cleaning: Cue

To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: Preshow Clips/Playlist: Built a playlist for the Reverend screening. The slide for the intro/performance and Q&A hasn’t been confirmed, but I put the Brooklyn Vegan in for now. Will also need to confirm the setup for the performance with John so I can prep it as much as possible as I won’t be here on Tuesday. From the looks of it he’ll be playing keyboard and singing, so it shouldn’t be too complicated. Added the Buffet tip PSA to next week’s first run playlists. The Grill one from this week was left in them. Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content): Outgoing/Shipping (content): Print/video Inspection: Looked at some of the first reel of The Iron Giant , the digital soundtrack was fairly damaged, this would have been why processor fell back on the analog track during the screening today. To do this evening/ was completed: Set up DJ gear in Trees. Presentation Issues: At the start of Iron Giant, as the intro credits were rolling, I noticed that the CP500 had switched from Dolby Digital to Dolby SR. I tried to switch over to Digital but the processor would not allow that as the film was running, so I closed the heat shield and stopped the motor to switch to the right format. This pause lasted 5-10 seconds, before the film started proper. A few minutes later the CP500 switched back to SR, then back to Digital, then back to SR again. Nothing was wrong with my threading, so I resolved to run the audio in the SR format. Went into the theater a few times to check things out and the movie sounded great. At the beginning of reel three the picture was out of frame despite the countdown being framed properly. Easy adjustment, no problem. I checked the reel after the show and made sure the countdown leader was in frame. When I got to the picture it was out of frame by one sprocke

Volumes noted and cues added to playlists. Desmond also checked the Proud Family DCP. Info noted in the asset doc. It’s 1.78, maybe very slightly narrower as it appears just off center with the 1.78 masking without any bleed on the curtain. I’ll adjust the lens offset in a new lens file before the screening. Jack and I reset all the theaters, though the first round was cancelled (except for the 5pm Dragon Ball in Theater 1). Preshow Clips/Playlist: Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: The Out of Bounds screening went well. The warp on the print at the head and tail of each reel caused the image to go in and out of focus at the center for 30 or so seconds at the beginning and end of each reel. Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content): Outgoing/Shipping (content): Printed and attached shipping labels for Fire Walk With Me . Scheduled a FedEx pickup for Monday. Print/video Inspection: Reinspected and packed up Crooklyn . Began inspecting No Way Out , looks to be in pretty good shape. First reel was a little dusty, with a bit of scratches on the base side, though I doubt they’ll affect the picture on screen greatly. Asset

To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: DMS's work on the ballast in theater 2's projector must have affected the 2.20 FLAT lens file because the image was thrown off-center on screen once the feature content started during the second round; one of the servers radioed me to let me know and I adjusted it via the touchpad and saved the lens file Preshow Clips/Playlist: Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content): Outgoing/Shipping (content): Print/video Inspection: Finished re-inspecting Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and readied it for return shipment (the print is at the bottom of the steps to booth 1) Finished inspecting Mo' Better Blues this evening   and the print is easily the best looking one I've had the pleasure of handling here (it is in immaculate condition with next to no scratches, just some light dust covering its edges throughout from storage/shipment) and the projectio

To do this evening/ was completed:  Presentation Issues: Right after I left, Will texted me that the cleaning lights were not coming on in Theater 2, using either the automation cue or the button on the rack. He put the lights up to the Full setting so the theater could be cleaned while I checked the settings on the IP address for the Th2 lights. The settings were all fine, and the flouroescents were on before the theater opened so they’re definitely working. I changed the cleaning settings to the same as Full for now so the theater will have enough light for cleaning. Not sure what would have caused this—DMS was here working on the projector in Th2 but I doubt that would’ve affected the automation for the fluorescents specifically. They also skipped through some of our show playlists after they finished and didn’t mention anything like this as they left. I’ll look into this as much as possible tomorrow and contact DMS if I can’t get to the bottom of it. The theater will not go dark af

To do this evening/ was completed: Inspected reel one of Days of Thunder , and added some countdown leader to reel two. Noticed that reel one does not have any changeover cues so I added some with the grease pencil. The reel has motor cues but they appear too late, so I added new motor cues as well. Please let me know if the new cues need to be redone/how they look on screen. Added additional countdown leader to reel two but I haven't inspected it yet. Reel four can be put on screen as I inspected it a few days ago. I'll continue inspection this weekend. The Fifth Element print is on the push cart by the side entrance, ready for pickup. Presentation Issues: When I changed over to reel two of Twin Peaks, it was very out of focus. I refocused immediately so nothing to worry about but I'm wondering if we can make it standard procedure to run a test loop prior to opening so we can have a baseline focus when the print goes on screen. Additionally reel two was showing a significa

Out of Bounds print came as well, brought it up to booth 1. Outgoing/Shipping (content): Contacted Sony about picking up The Fifth Element . A courier will be coming to collect it tomorrow. Print/video Inspection: Began reinspecting Jungle Fever. I’ll arrange for DHL to have this picked up along with Crooklyn on Monday. Ran some of Crooklyn in Theater 4 for Desmond, it looks and sounds great. We also quickly checked both slides for Mo Better Blues in Theater 1. Checked the Bodies Bodies Bodies playlist, it’s all set. Went over adding footage markers to prints

To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: During one of my walkthroughs I noticed the left rear surround speaker in theater 6 was crackling; it wasn't audible from the center or sides of the room, but passing through the door to the auditorium and standing just beneath the speaker I could hear it crackle very clearly (this seems to only occur during moments in the film when the bass is amplified or when the mix is peaking on the high end) Last round in theater 2 did not start as scheduled; had to be started/unpaused manually after a 5 minute delay Preshow Clips/Playlist: Trailer Updates: Special Events/ AV set up: Scheduled staff screenings for Bodies Bodies Bodies ; Jungle Fever screening in theater 4 this evening went swimmingly and the print has been left with tails out for re-inspection in 4/6 Ordering/Receiving (posters & trailers): Ordering/Receiving (content): Received a new trailer mix DCP for the week of 8/12 and downloaded and ingested all first run keys

To do this evening/ was completed: Inspected the first three reels of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. The print is in really good condition with relatively minimal base scratching. The only significant damage I noticed was a long vertical emulsion scratch right after the motor cue on reel three. All damage has been logged on the inspection sheet. Uploaded stills to Google Drive and notified Conrad. One other potential minor anomaly (though maybe it's just something I haven't noticed before): there's often a straight white line that appears at the top of the frame when the film cuts to a new shot. The line is only on the first frame of each new shot. Not sure if it's the way the print was struck--curious to know what it might be. Presentation Issues: Rounds two and three in T2 did not start as automated.  When I changed over to reel four of Fifth Element, the screen was black. I immediately realized that I had forgotten to close the lens turret. The screen was black for 3

To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: Seems the dowser on the Theater 1 Christie is not closing with the light lock board down. Not much of an issue for digital shows, but for 35mm there will be a brief flash on screen when the lamp shuts off at the end of the digital playlist. This can be avoided by placing a piece of cardboard or something else that will block the light from the lens on the ledge of the port window after the end of the last digital clip. DMS will be bringing a replacement when they come to replace the ballast in the Theater 2 Christie (they’ve ordered one which is on its way to us, should be here Thursday). To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: Continued turning up the feature volume in theater 1 as the fans were kept on throughout the late afternoon and evening The surround sound in theater 1 went a little haywire during the last round this evening (Gerard first noticed it during the trailers before Nope  began playing and radioed me) which caused the sound to play from the wrong speakers throughout the auditorium. After quickly checking the room and hearing the issue I told the MODs that I would try to cycle through the channel assignments first via the Dolby app on the 4/6 booth PC to try to fix it; this proved unhelpful so I asked to reboot the processor in order to recalibrate the speaker channels. To make matters worse, I could not close the dowser remotely before pausing the film (I tried manually pressing the dowser close button on the touchpad itself and not even that would do anything to the image) so I brought the lights up with the picture still on screen aft

To do this evening/ was completed: Started inspecting Days of Thunder print. Initially I thought I'd hold off on doing so because we have a handful of prints coming up before this one but we should have enough reels to accommodate the coming week. So far the print is in decent condition with some significant base scratching. Presentation Issues: Bumped the volume up in T1 during all rounds as we had the fans blowing in the auditorium.  T2 round two did not start as automated. To do this evening/ was completed: Presentation Issues: Preshow Clips/Playlist: Noticed two minutes before its first show today that this week's Minions playlist had the R trailer pack built into it. Swapped in the PG pack right before it started, and saved a bunch of kids from seeing the red band Bodies Bodies Bodies trailer. Top Gun had the R trailers, too, which I switched to PG13, before the first show started as well. Please be more careful when building trailers into playlists, this would've been a pretty terrible look (especially for Minions ) if I hadn't caught it beforehand. Downloaded and ingested all new preshow content for next week, built new trailer packs and first run playlists. Also built preshow playlists for Crooklyn , Sundays on Fire, and Days of Thunder . Didn’t build Mo Better Blues , I assume we’ll be getting new preshow for the live music. Likewise No Way Out , waiting for the intro slide still. No content for A League of Their Own and Men in Blac
